Purpose for Each Day

God gives us a purpose for each day

Have you ever come into contact with one of those people who has an everlasting supply of positivity and energy? Were you inspired by their bright outlook on life? (Or were they just slightly annoying?!). Regardless, people with that kind of an attitude almost always have something in common: a purpose for each day.

No Purpose = Lack of Motivation

When we don’t have a clear purpose for each day, it can be difficult to stay motivated. Getting out of bed in the morning doesn’t matter much if we have no reason to get up. And if our past has left us feeling beaten down by loss, abuse, or adverse circumstances, it can be easy to experience feelings of depression and hopelessness. A lack of purpose for each day can lead us to be unmotivated or feel depressed

Even if the work we are doing or the activities we are engaging in are part of God’s will for us, we can feel stuck or unfulfilled. Eventually, the frustration within us will build until we can’t go another step. And unless we are in touch with the Holy Spirit, we will have no revelation from God as to what to do about it.

Each Day is a New Beginning

God promises us a new supply of mercy every day. Each day is a new beginning with Him. The mercy that He showed us yesterday doesn’t have an expiry date. It is not “single use.” Each day we can awake to a fresh supply of His love and care over our lives and a purpose for each day.

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion,
Slow to anger and great in mercy.

The Lord is good to all,
And His tender mercies are over all His works.

Psalm 145:8,  9

We Must Ask

But the thing is, we have to ask Him to be in our lives for the day. He will not force His way into our day. That’s not to say that He doesn’t care for us if we forget to ask, but He will not be as close to us as He is when we invite Him to spend the day with us. If we don’t ask, He allows us to run our lives our own way. We are like a small child who insists on filling a glass of water on their own, only to spill it because they can’t quite do it alone.

When we spill our water, God is there for us. But in His loving way, He reminds us that if we had asked Him, we might have had the wisdom to avoid our catastrophe. Many, many times, the Holy Spirit within us leads us to make good decisions and prompts us to avoid problems if we are in touch with Him and listening to Him throughout the day. Even the smallest things are not beneath His notice. He is willing to point out tiny inconveniences that can be avoided if we listen. He loves us and wants to help us to get through the day.

Pay Attention to Your Purpose for Each Day God's mercies are new each morning

But more than just helping us through the day, He also wants us to pay attention to our purpose for each day. He can give us a reason for getting out of bed and set us free from the things that drag us down and make us want to hide from the world, run away, or engage in destructive behaviour. When we come to Him with a sincere desire to know our purpose, He will reveal it. He wants us to live fulfilling lives and be satisfied and content with who we are and what we are doing.

Each morning is a fresh start with God. Even if yesterday was a mess, today is a new beginning. Let’s make is a priority to follow Him today and to give Him our allegiance first thing when we wake up. Ask Him to show us our purpose for each day and for the strength to choose to follow His leading no matter what. We can find hope and fulfillment in knowing that He wants us to move forward into all that He has for us.
